Trump is you, without the mask

Trump is nothing new. He merely came to lift the carpet under which the Western world has been shoving their dirt for decades now. The people who are scared of him are scared because they have been willingly or unwillingly keeping their eyes closed to the abuses, totalitarian tactics, murders, corporate power grab, oppression of lower classes, the people who wanted to buy the liberal propaganda about the good and the bad guys in power, the good capitalism and the bad capitalism. They wanted to buy this propaganda because it makes them feel better about themselves, about the fact that they are working for, supporting and sustaining a system of exploitation, of violence and destruction that has engulfed the whole planet in a death spiral.

Are you enraged by the fact that refugees, men women and children, who are escaping war and torture are being illegally jailed for months or years, being refused refugee status under the paranoid suspicion of “being terrorists”?

That does not only happen in Trump’s USA. This has been going on for years, in the USA, in the portrayed as “progressive” Canada and in vastly greater numbers in the also progressive portrayed European Union. Here is a tiny example from Canada.

And another one from the “civilised Europe” where hundreds of thousands of women and children are detained or jailed for years at a time, often outdoors in the cold and with barely enough food.

Are you worried because people are being screened and detained based on their appearance or political activities like this lady?

Very sad indeed. That’s exactly what has been happening forever to thousands of activists, blacks, anarchists, Palestinians, many Arabs and others when they try to arrive in Western countries or merely try to board on a plane. That’s what actually happened to me the first time I stepped my foot on USA soil (under the Bill Clinton administration) and also what happened to me in the Athens international airport and then again in Tel Aviv, both times by Israeli agents, on my way to Palestine.

Are you worried about the undoing of environmental and labour regulations or putting the corporate profits above public interests? Are you mad at the prospect that multinational corporations can dictate laws or actually argue that a law is not necessary because it can potentially be “trade restrictive”? Well, that’s exactly what the Trans-Pacific Partnership that the Obama administration drafted (in secret) from which by the way Trump just withdrew, or the TTIP that Obama admin and the European Union drafted (also in secret), or the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU that was just signed a couple of months ago.

Here is a comprehensive analysis of these agreements

Are you worried about warmongering and provocations against other countries by the Trump administration? Well, you should have started worrying a long time ago when the Obama administration along with Germany, the UK, France and the rest of their NATO allies, have been encircling Russia and Iran with military bases, amassing forces in their borders, installing a anti-missile shield in their peripheries, bombing more countries than anyone else did since World War II or giving more weapons of latest technology than any one else ever did to brutal regimes such as Saudi Arabia or Israel.

Trump is just a mirror; what we see in the mirror is our world unmasked, having been co-opted by patriarchy, colonisation and a brutal system of economic exploitation of life in all its forms and manifestations. All this that you are afraid of, has already been happening with the support of Liberals, Conservatives, Republicans and Democrats, Social-democrats, the Right the Left, the Corporate Mass Media and the Oil/Bank cartels…in the end with the tolerance or even the support of most of us.

The only difference now is that the target group has changed. The conflicts between different groups of power requires that they have their followers; now the “progressive brand” corporate mass media have to convince the “progressive” populace that the things were great before and suddenly some lunatics came to power who want to undo everything that’s fair and just about our “great democracies”, exactly as the “conservative brand” corporate mass media have been doing when the “progressives” were in power.

If you are enraged or worried about what is happening then rise up not against Trump, but against the structures of government, of profiteering and propaganda that have been systematically planning, executing and imposing everything that you are afraid that Trump might do; and try to remember that changing just the director of a jail might help create a more jolly or pleasant jail, but it still is a jail. It’s the jail we have to demolish, not the ones managing it.

The Brexit brought the masks of “representative democracy” down. The real question now is:Fascism or Direct Democracy?

CJeLSiaUsAEyO1aThe Brexit vote like the Greek referendum last year (which rejected the 3rd Memorandum and the neoliberal measures that accompanied it but was totally ignored by the EU establishment and the Greek political parties) is portrayed as a racist, xenophobic “anti-European” (whatever that means) vote. The lines are clear; rich people voted in the EU, poor and unemployed voted out (yes, the poverty levels are much higher amongst retired people and yes, voters under 24 who have mainly benefited from the freedom of movement within the EU and don’t see much point in national identity but at the same time have not seen any benefits cuts, did not have to use the health care system or have not looked for permanent employment, voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU).
The “Left” in Europe (and in N.America) has been co-opted by the neoliberal capitalist dogma for more than 25 years now. After their own version of authoritarian central planning, for the benefit of the people (the countries of “Existing” socialism), failed, they felt that the other version of authoritarian central planning, for the benefit of profits and capital this time, must be the road to success.
It never crossed their minds that authoritarianism, centralisation of power and quantification of the human condition and life, are at the centre of the failure of such “systems” to inspire a sense of social security, solidarity and contentment to people.
Yes, inequalities, poverty and hierarchical structures breed racism, xenophobia and fear; but ONLY IF there is nothing else there to inspire, unite and mainly question the failed status quo. The Right, Centre and Left of the representative democracy in Europe are bankrupt. They have nothing new to offer and their only differences are cosmetic. They all adhere to the market-democracy principles, they all speak the same language of never-ending growth, flexible labour market, competitiveness, debt and index-based life, they all accept the model of private ownership of the means of production, of land, of profits and all have the arrogance of power that believes that “we know better because we’re in higher positions in the hierarchy that we, ourselves have made”.
It is characteristic that the only political party in Britain that supported the Brexit has 1 MP in the House of Commons. Is it possible that suddenly 52% of Britons became racist and xenophobic supporters of the UKIP? No, of course not! The traditionally Labour areas, especially the poor working-class ones, voted Out with big margins.
Is this not another “in your face” indication that representative democracy does not deliver what it promises to do, namely, to represent the will of people? As if democracy can be anything else but direct, inclusive and participative. Choosing who will decide for you, who will govern you and impose their opinion on everyone, is not democracy; it is an insult to human dignity and self-determination, it is an elected Oligarchy.
The European Union, like NATO, the World Trade Organisation, the IMF or any other reactionary, conservative and deeply undemocratic/hierarchical institution cannot change from within. Such pleas remind me of some homosexuals wanting to be accepted by the Catholic Church. This is against their dogma, their raison d’etre, their mission! You can’t make them change; the only thing we can change is ourselves. Let’s not just talk or demand (by who??) about a different society built on social justice, solidarity and respect for the planet; let us make it a reality, here, now, in our everyday life, in our homes, schools, neighbourhoods, work places, while at the same time being at the forefront of organising together politically and socially. Or we can just sign another online petition kindly asking a bunch of bureaucrats to “please respect the fact that we’re also humans and to not see us as numbers”…that might work too, right?

Brexit: Should we talk about what the EU really is or should we just scare people?

So the Brexit referendum is around the corner. The Leave campaign (mainly the UKIP and the right wing of the Conservative party) is concentrating on immigration and warns people how bad it is to have people coming into the UK, using the public services and working for low paying jobs while paying taxes and contributing to your society. We are talking about the same UK, the colonial power that during the past century invaded half the planet, committed multiple genocides, and of course had an open immigration policy for anyone that was willing to adhere to the anglo-saxonic values of capitalism. The same people are arguing that the decision-power in the EU is too centralised and antidemocratic (which it absolutely is) and they are advocating for bringing the decision power back to the hands of Britons….because the House of Commons, the House of Lords, the UK electoral system and their so egalitarian society is very democratic and decentralised….
The Remain campaign (the whole establishment of the Cons, Liberals, Labours, supported by charitable organisations and people such as the IMF, the European Comission, George Soros, Barack Obama etc.) is trying to scare people telling them that out of the idyllic fraternal paradise of the EU there awaits hell; especially for the economy. One could ask, are they blind to see that the EU is going through their worst economic period since WW II? Are they forgetting that they were making the same arguments about the € which now, even its greatest proponents admit that it is a failure? Are we to believe any of their predictions the moment that they even fail to make a sensible prognosis about the GDP or the inflation of next year anywhere in Europe? Are they to trust that they know what they are talking about when they failed to see the 2009 crisis coming and with their policies they have managed to bring the highest unemployment and inequality rates in Europe since WW II?
I think that the arguments of both sides are not only bogus but an obvious case of scare-mongering. None of the real issues are even touched while keeping people in a endless spiral of blame game and fear.
So, what would I vote if I were able to do so? Without a second thought, Leave; but for very very different reasons.
All you see that is wrong with the EU, the high unemployment, the authoritarianism, the ever-increasing inequalities, the violation of intentional law concerning refugees, the free circulation of capital and avoidance of taxes, the concentration of power in the hands of a few unelected bankers and career politicians, are not a bug, they are a feature. They are not mistakes or wrong turns taken at one point in the evolution of the EU; they are the targets set and principles adopted in the founding treaties of the EU.
It is astonishing that one would talk about the EU and its policies or about Brexit and its consequences without referring to the Maastricht, Amsterdam and Lisbon Treaties that basically describe the framework, the targets, the values and the distribution of power that makes up the modern EU institutions. It is even more astonishing that from the people I ask, both politicians and citizens (and I ask a LOT of them) only a handful has even read even excerpts of these treaties. It’s like trying to make a decision about whether you will support a law without having read it (and that’s a very common occurrence amongst members of parliament as well).
It seems absurd to me that the criticism of the EU has been high-jacked throughout Europe by xenophobes, racists and conservatives. Instead of the European progressive thinking people making their anti-neoliberal EU arguments clear and fighting for democracy and decentralisation, for equality, diversity and social justice, they are trying to present the EU as the champion of all of the above while at the same time they are warning that more autonomy, more decentralisation and a rejection of the neoliberal project of the EU would bring the exact opposite results. The decadence of what used to be called “The European Left” is astonishing. The have allowed the neonazi hate-preaching parties to be the ones asking for more democracy (!!) and decentralisation of power (!!).
So, in this Brexit referendum it seems to me that voters are being asked to buy a house without having visited it or read about its specifications. The only thing you get to see is the polished advertisement campaign of the one who’s trying to sell it to you; and the one who wants to prevent you from buying it is trying to convince you by telling you that the house is haunted.
I am not going to tell you in this text what exactly the founding Treaties of the EU contain as that would not fit not only in one article but not even in a book. I will urge you however, to read them and even more to understand the policies, consequences and obligations that derive and arise from these Treaties. To put it simply, the EU is designed to be a neoliberal fanatic’s wet dream. Privatisations are imposed, the competition amongst people in all levels (from the “labour market” to education) becomes the ultimate goal, the monetisation of all public goods and human interactions are revered, everything, from laws and education to health care and land, is put into the service of the “market” forces. These are very clearly described in all of the Treaties which have mostly passed without asking the people of Europe. In the rare cases where a referendum was held, the people rejected these Treaties. Of course the authoritarian establishment has the solution for that too; just ignore the result or just repeat the referendum a year later after having poured more resources and propaganda into the campaign.
Characteristically, when the European Constitution was rejected by the French and Dutch people the principles described in it were incorporated into the Lisbon Treaty. The people of France and Holland were not asked this time. However, the people of Ireland were asked and rejected the Lisbon Treaty. 15 months later the European establishment, after an intense propaganda campaigned asked the Irish again; this time the didn’t dare reject it….because you know, the result of a referendum is forever…there is no second chance as the EU is now saying to the UK voters; unless of course the result does not suit the establishment…then there are several second chances…And this is just an example. Since 1975, seven referendum results rejecting further EU integration have been repeated because their result was not convenient for the establishment.
The neoliberal totalitarian project called the EU, is already failing. A majority of the peoples of the EU countries now see unfavourably this bureaucratic monster. This union is doomed to fall apart and fail; not fail the corporations and the bankers who created it in the first place but fail us, its citizens, its living beings who pay the consequences of the fanatic dogmatism of neoliberal capitalism that puts profits above humans, above the environment, above life itself. British voters, this 23rd of June, you might as well take the first step on behalf of all of us.

Refugees and the beauty of Western supremacist propaganda in the media.

War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength and Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes are Generous Humanitarian Aid:

Last autumn when 10.000 Syrian refugees arrived in Germany (a country of 81 million people with a per capita GDP of 40,000 $ and a trade surplus of 90 billion $) the media around the world were raving about it. The world congratulated the German people on the social media and the financial colonialists felt proud of themselves.

Greece (with a population of just 10 million and a massive trade deficit) and Italy (two countries that have 40% and 60% of the per capita GDP of Germany) have been receiving around 2000 refugees EVERY SINGLE DAY for the past few months and hundreds of thousands more for the past 6 years with virtually no financial aid from the rest of the European Union (the biggest aid the EU gave to Greece was to build a wall in her borders in order to stop refugees from entering Europe)

Turkey had been hosting almost 3 million refugees for years without any international aid.

Jordan’s (a country of 6.6 million people) half the population is Palestinian refugees and in addition is now hosting almost 1 million more Syrian and Iraqi refugees in camps (some of them operated and financed by the United Arab Emirates).

Lebanon (a country of 4.4 million people) has been hosting more than half a million Palestinian and Iraqi refugees and since 2012 has received more than 1.1 million Syrian refugees.

Pakistan is hosting more than 1.5 million refugees from Afghanistan and Chad more than 500,000 from Sudan.

Iran is hosting almost 1 million refugees mainly from Afghanistan and Iraq.

In Nauru and Djibouti around 5% of their populations are refugees.

86% of all refugees are being hosted, fed and taken care of by poor countries. Even if that creates a huge strain on their economies and social conditions I do not see the xenophobic, racist and hysterical attacks that are generated in Europe and North America when a few desperate people (mainly attacked and uprooted because of NATO wars and Western countries arms sales) arrive in their rich countries.

It’s once more proven that the powerful ones that are guided by superiority complexes can turn truth upside down and make the sheep happy or proud for the crimes of their “democratically” elected officials and their “democratic, liberal, humanitarian” cultural traditions.

The two main reasons why this issue has a prominent position on your screens is first because the aforementioned countries have overflowed with refugees so now some drops are pouring out and have reached the rich central colonial Europe and second (and keep that in mind next time you support another “humanitarian” intervention) there is another big Western war brewing (they will call it humanitarian intervention against ISIS, which they themselves, along with their local tyrant allies of Saudi Arabia et cia have created) and the public opinion has to be won over with propaganda and hypnosis once more.

For as long as humans are exploiting other humans through profit, hierarchical and oppressive structures these phenomena will not stop; people will not stop fleeing their lands and the colonial powers creating more misery for humanity. Meanwhilst, our unconditional solidarity towards every victim and every refugee of these structures and wars has to be non-negotiable.

The EU mafia: Witness to their crimes

One of the worst violations of human rights and one of the biggest mass killings of civilians Europe has experienced since the Second World War is taking place as we speak; and the vast majority of corporate media as well as the people of Europe are staying silent. According to the International Organisation for Migration and the Human Rights Watch, only during the past 2 years, at least 8000 mainly women and children have drowned in their attempt to escape from the deadliest wars of the past 40 years in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Just as a reminder, ALL of these wars were either started or fuelled through arms hand outs and training of extremist groups mainly by the USA and their NATO allies. Of course these numbers do not include the thousands of refugees who die on the way before they ever reach the borders of Europe, mainly in the ragged mountains on the borders of Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey and the people who are shot or tortured by the smugglers or the authorities in the aforementioned countries.

I have spoken to hundreds of refugees and they all have the same gruesome stories to share. On their way to Europe most of them have to cross Turkey. There, the smugglers in admirable collaboration with the authorities, repeatedly take them hostage, threaten them and torture them in order to  extort the maximum amount of money they can from them. I have been told about secret underground prisons where refugees are kept like animals, hungry and thirsty until they pay their 20-30€ fee in order to be set free. Refugees have described to me how the smugglers “rent” the highways from the Turkish Gendarmerie (a branch of the Turkish Armed Forces responsible for the maintenance of the public order in areas that fall outside the jurisdiction of police forces, generally in rural areas). That means that the Turkish Gendarmerie are getting paid so that they remove their check-points for a few hours; if the refugees can’t make it through during these time slots then they usually get arrested and asked for more money in order to be released. Only a few days ago the first documented killings of refugees by the Turkish armed forces as they are trying to cross from Syria into Turkey have surfaced. Only yesterday, the Bulgarian army shot dead an Afghan refugee as he was trying to cross the border from Turkey.

Of course, as is always the case, this is a matter of social class. Most of the rich and upper-class people who want to escape the war zones, do so by plane and European or North American passports that have been issued by the industry of human suffering within the Western embassies themselves. The cost of buying passports and a plane ticket to Europe for a family of 4 varies between 100.000 and 200.000 €. The transaction takes place using an ingenious system where money never changes hands directly. It becomes obvious that the financial beneficiaries of this situation have no reason to see this situation changed. When one wants to solve a crime and find the perpetrator, one has to answer a simple question: In whose benefit?

Almost all of the refugees I have spoken to have had a close relative or a friend killed in the wars back in their home countries; and still the “civilised and democratic” Europe, the very regimes that invade other countries using the violation of human rights as a pretext, have come to be some of the worst human rights violators themselves. Under and agreement that the 28 countries of the EU have signed with Turkey, tens of thousands of refugees (I remind you again that around 40% of which are children) are to be held in prison concentration camps mainly in Greece, without any access to basic necessities, medical attention, legal representation, humanitarian organisations, until they are expelled back to Turkey; the same Turkey whose totalitarian regime is murdering hundreds of its own citizens in the Kurdish dominated areas of its south-east territory. The same Turkey where refugees are being extorted, imprisoned and tortured. That is why most refugees are telling me that they prefer going back to die in their home land than being deported back to Turkey. Already, in the first few days of massive deportations 2 refugees have committed suicide as soon as they were sent back to Turkey. Of course this agreement is in flagrant violation of the Geneva Convention, the New York Protocol and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union which clearly states in the two clauses of Article 19:

1. Collective expulsions are prohibited.
2. No one may be removed, expelled or extradited to a State where there is a serious risk that he or
she would be subjected to the death penalty, torture or other inhuman or degrading treatment or
Another outrageous part of the agreement is the fact that it does not recognise the right of Afghanis or Pakistanis to apply for asylum as these countries are “not considered at war”. The images bellow were taken a few months ago in Afghanistan where the civilian casualties of the war, almost equally split between Talibans, ISIS, Afghan Forces and NATO-led forces, rose to record levels for the seventh year in row in 2015, especially amongst women and children

In Pakistan alone at least 1100 civilians have been killed in bomb blasts and battles between extremists and the army while hundreds more have been murdered in USA drone strikes and bombardments during the past 2 years. These are the countries the EU is considering “not at war” and wants to deport thousands of civilians back to.

Every single refugee death is a direct consequence of the policies of the EU. Turkey and Greece share a land border. If this border had been opened, we would not have a single drowned toddler, we wouldn’t have a single extorted or tortured refugee. Since Austria, Germany and most Balkan countries closed their borders to refugees the only thing they have achieved is to throw these vulnerable people in the hands of armed gangs. Only yesterday, a family of Afghani refugees I had met here in Athens a couple of weeks ago, contacted me from Hungary describing me their ordeal as they fell in the hands of criminals in the FYROM-Greece border where they were taken hostages at gun-point until ransom was paid. The same day a Syrian refugee contacted me from Italy, where he had just arrived through Albania giving the last bit of money he had left to Albanian and Italian smugglers.
Borders, guns and authoritarian regimes might kill, extort or drown some, but eventually people who are desperate will find a way to get to a safe space. It’s not a mere matter of a “better future” for them and their children; it is a matter of life and death. The only two things closed borders policies achieve are 1. The deaths of thousands of innocent people running away from wars we have started and extremist groups we have armed or financed and 2. Handing out more than 6 billion € so far, to criminal gangs of smugglers.
Every single refugee I came across, when asked whether they would like to go back to their home country if things get better in the future answered “home is home; of course we would go back”. These wars will continue being necessary as long as they are profitable for big corporations and serve as generators of endless crowds of desperate people who are willing to work for peanuts. The Western imperialism, the arms industry, the totalitarian “representative democracies” and most of all the blinded masses who numbly watch human rights violated, other humans being imprisoned without a judicial process and thousands of them killed and extorted, are all responsible. If we don’t act now, very soon, the time will come when in the place of these imprisoned, tortured and desperate people will be us; and then there will be no one left to save us.
